The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires that animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act receive care that meets current standards of veterinary practice. These standards require using aseptic technique for survival surgery. Although rats and mice are not covered by current USDA regulations, these standards do apply to research using guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other rodent models.
