INTRODUCTION

The guinea pig, Cavia porcellus, has been used in the study of infectious bacterial diseases, neoplasms, nutrition, teratology and other reproductive research.

The Dunkin-Hartley is the most commonly used stock of guinea pigs used in research. The relatively long gestation of this species - while ideal for some types of reproductive studies- increases the cost of producing this animal for research.
