Horses, Equus caballus, are occasionally used as research animals. Horses are generally categorized as ponies, light horses, or draft horses. In the laboratory, horses are most often used as a source of blood for the production of specific serums, antiserums, and antitoxins.
At Arizona State University horses participate in the Alternative Intervention Research Clinic - Equine Therapy Program, a program to investigate and compare the effects of various therapeutic programs (i.e. horseback, exercise, sports, music) on the behavior and cognitive characteristics of special needs populations (i.e. attention deficit, emotionally disturbed, autistic). All horses in this program will be used up to but not exceeding 3 hours of lessons per day, six days per week as required by the National Association of Handicapped Riders of America policies and procedures manual.
